Today was my second attempt at a tempo run. My first one, two weeks ago, was run on a sore throat. Well today I was suffering from a serious wine headache. You see, we went out for dinner last night with my parents to celebrate my recent engagement, and the wine was flowing. So this morning I was seriously not looking forward to my planned lunchtime run. But I packed my gear, had some mid morning cereal with lots of water and headed out just before noon.
Of course, 5 minutes into my warm-up I felt better. Despite trying to cure my headache with espresso and advil apparently running was the cure. The run was good, I could’ve gone longer but didn’t have time as I had a 1pm meeting. Despite being done running by 12:25, then stretching and taking a full shower I was still super red faced and dewy when I walked into my meeting. Sigh. I didn’t expect it to be a muggy and sunny 23 out! It is fall for fucks sake. Of course last week I saw practically no-one jogging since it was lightly raining. Today of course there were over a dozen people I saw. I can’t imagine how these people survive being fair weather runners in this city.
Overall my pace was okay, but I wasn’t good at finding it. I planned to run the first my mile at around 10:30, which I didn’t, then aim for 9:25-9:30 on the other 2.5 plus a bit of a cooldown. Overall I was too fast again. The tempo of the song, as well as where my mind was wandering seemed to really affect my pace. I guess this is why tempo runs are called thinking mans runs? I was checking my wrist every minute or so and it ranged from 8:55-10:05 pretty equally. But this is the point right? Eventually I will find my pace? Anyone have any tips on how to use a garmin for a tempo run?
- Distance: 3.9 miles
- Time: 37:42
- Avg\Max HR: 150\170
- Avg pace: 9:41
- Laps: 9:55 (too fast!), 9:28 (good), 9:14 (too fast but good enough), 9:17 pace for .67, + cooldown
- Cals: 420
healthy meal idea of the day:
An oldie of mine but a goodie try this zucchini, tomatoes, peppers and goat cheese pasta, serve it on whole wheat pasta.

i don’t have a garmin and until very recently i did all my tempos on the tm. and i totally agree, if my mind wanders my pace slows wayyy down. definitely need to stay focused on the pace. which sans garmin usually means i run at the point of being uncomfortable which leads my mind to wandering which leads to sharp focus and fast pace. vicious cycle.
but great job on the tempo! way to push hard in that weather
