long run, sneezing and struggling

The training plan called for a 6 mile long run this morning, so I got up, had some water and headed out towards the beautiful weather.  Unfortunately my run was generally unpleasant after the first 2 miles or so. During the last 15 minutes of my run, I pondered the reasons why the run sucked and I came up with the following reasons:

  • bad fueling: I didn’t bring anything, or eat first. Baddddd.
  • badly chosen route: I had to run by the car. Twice. Not good for the mental game.
  • my cold:  yes I was sneezing, and more fatigued then otherwise
  • i thought it would be easy:  In my head, I was looking forward to this run all week, I ran 6 miles 3 weeks ago fine, and in the grand scheme of things it really isn’t that far.  Yeah, not the way to approach it mentally.
  • my hamstrings are still really sore: I didn’t mention it yesterday but all those lunges, and jumping lunges with the weight vest really left an impression.

So obviously it wasn’t a great run.  For every great run, running karma states that you have to have a not so great run, so hopefully I am due some good ones in the future.  The good news is that my pace was bang on, even if I did walk up a few hills, and I hit the mileage for the week.

  • Distance: 6.14 miles
  • Time: 1:05:07
  • Pace: 10:36 min/miles
  • Avg HR\Max HR:  150/166
  • Cals: 651
  • Mile Laps: 10:37, 10:21, 10:38, 10:41, 10:11, 10:56, + a bit extra

Since it came up on Caitlin’s blog yesterday, I thought I would mention a minor incident I had during my run today. This is likely too much information, so feel free to skip the rest of this paragraph.  I have a cold, we all know that. Well around mile 4 I had a sneezing attack. On sneeze three, I peed a little. Gah! Obviously I stopped, got control of my sneezing, and my bladder, and then continued. It was actually a minor highlight on my run,  because I thought it was so funny given that it was a hot topic yesterday.

I am so off to eat a burger and some soup!  If only I didn’t have a cold I would chase it all with a beer.

healthy meal idea for the day:

I made this yesterday and will post officially in a few days, but here is how to make an easy spaghetti squash casserole. Mix cooked spaghetti squash with 1 cup of sour cream, a whack of chopped chives, some salt and pepper and some grated Parmesan or Romano.  Pour into a baking dish and sprinkle with more cheese.  Bake for 30 minutes at 400F or until bubbly and browned on top. You can hurry the browning along under the broiler if you want.

  • sucks that you had a bad run, but it’s good that your pace was still spot-on! but your totally right about running having karma, i tend to think of it as more cyclical but you’re definitely due for some good ones soon :)

  • agh, the internet ate my comment! okay, i’ll try again: so i think the squash recipe sounds really good–especially since it looks pretty easy to make. yum! and props for getting out and running mid-cold. that ain’t fun, and you knocked it out! woohoo!

  • Karyn – cyclical, I like that too.

Cindy – yeah the squash works, super easy and even my boyfriend liked t.
