diagnosing my knee pain & a few days rest

Its been three days now without a run.  After the 10 miler on Sunday I did everything right but I still woke up hobbled on Sunday.  Since it still really hurt going up and down stairs on Monday I did some research.  Chelsea was bang on, it is my IT band that is causing the problem.  I booked a massage yesterday and my masseuse did a bunch of IT stripping as well as work on my glutes and calfs. (Holly hell that hurts!)  So far it is way better, I was even hoping to run today but it was still really stiff and tight when I woke up so I decided to hold off.  I am going to roll out again now, and then again after work. That is the best I can do really.

I haven’t posted until now cause I have been feeling pretty down about it.   I miss the act of running (nothing like not being able to!) and I hate missing the days on my plan, it makes me feel like such a failure.   So.. yeah this is why I haven’t updated, cause it is just so negative.  I did workout on Monday, and I did get on the elliptical yesterday.  I have high hopes for a run tomorrow.

Lesson: If you are having knee pain on the outer side of your knee it is very possibly IT issues.  There is a great Q & A post on runners world to self-diagnose.

  • I’m sorry you’re feeling depressed about not being able to run, but at least you know what’s going on. When I had problems with my IT band, it came from wearing old shoes and running somewhere that was much hillier than I was used to. I hope the massage and time off helps things resolve quickly.

  • sorry youre feeling down but at least it’s something you can bounce back from! keep your head up and youll be hitting the streets before you know it :)
