shortened tempo, the knee flares

I think in these situations I am my own worst enemy, I need to take some time off for the ole knee I think.  My knee felt okay this morning, though I am still not feeling 100% (everyone is sick!), so I thought I would go ahead on my tempo at lunch time.   The goal was 45 minutes tempo at pace 9:25.

I was fine until about halfway (over the bridge maybe?) and then my knee started hurting quite a bit, it was also a genuinely hard run energy wise. The rain held off but I still wasn’t feeling it.  Then just after 35 minutes my body wouldn’t go fast anymore and my knee was really hurting so I called it.  I only did 35 minutes but I still feel like getting out there and doing something is worth more then not getting out there at all.

I am going to skip tomorrow’s run. (… You see by writing it on the blog I am actually going to do it.) Friday is already a rest day so I think the two days off in a row will help. Plus stretching and icing.  I think it must have been that one really big increase week that did it.  Plus I am breaking in some new orthotics which probably doesn’t help.

  • Distance: 5 miles
  • Time: 49:10
  • Pace: 9:54 (Tempo Pace: 9:33)
  • Avg HR/Max HR: 152/180
  • Cals:  489

healthy meal of the day idea:

Black Bean Soup with Fried Egg

  • taking some time off is definitely a smart idea. and re: tempo. was it supposed to be 45 minutes of tempo or 45 minutes total running? 45 of tempo might be a little ambitious, i know that i only go that long when i’m doing marathon training so part of your knee hurt might be overdoing it. just a thought :)

  • Oh no! I hope the time off helps your knee feel better. I know how hard it is to make yourself do that, though.

  • Karyn – you may be right you know! At first I would do 45 minutes total, that would include 10 minutes warm-up and 5 cool-down but then I started re-thinking the plan and thinking I was misreading it. I am using Hal Higdon Intermediate. Maybe it does mean total….

Chelsea – thanks for the positive thoughts. I am actually glad I am feeling a bit under the weather, running is a bit less attractive.
